It’s time to take another look at the ‘elevator pitch.’
These short briefs are often targeted toward new graduates looking to land a good job with a reputable company. But they’re really an important tool for small business owners, too. According to WordStream:
An elevator pitch is a short promotional speech or written blurb presented to a particular target audience to communicate the value of a product or service and get them to take action.
The pitch is an important tool not just for students and job candidates, but also for businesses pitching to clients and investors, and professionals pitching to stakeholders. All these people are busy; if you want their interest, you’ll need to find the best way to get it quickly.
So… how do you do that? WordStream has a few suggestions, including:
- Keeping your pitch to the point, and within 30-45 seconds,
- Keeping it interesting and memorable (possibly with humour, data, and/or storytelling),
- Keeping it personalized, and
- Being confident in your delivery.
WordStream has some good examples and suggestions; the MaRS Startup Toolkit has some good thoughts on this topic, too.
We recommend taking some time to build your small business’s elevator pitch; practice it, and hone it as needed, and when your opportunity presents itself, you’ll be ready.
