Trade show prep tips.

By now you’ve seen our trade show schedules for March, April, and May. We continually endorse trade shows as gateways to a new market, but getting the most out of your preferred event does take some preparation. So we’ve put together some tips and resources to help you get the most out of trade shows.

First, planning is critical. Why are you attending this show? What are your goals? Who are your targets? Knowing this before walking through the doors is essential, so use the event website to get a venue floor plan and a list of exhibitors, and select your contacts carefully. (You may find too many for one event, so prioritize your selections.)

Next, make appointments. Companies you target are often targeted by others, too. Many events now have apps that allow you to connect to (and set meetings with) key people at exhibitors’ booths, so download those apps and use the functionality to set meetings before the show starts.

Have your contact information ready. We’ve seen lists that stress the need to go armed with many business cards and be prepared to hand them out. And yes, this is important, but remember that many people are now opting for digital business cards, so be sure to have your phone’s QR code (and card) readers ready. You may even want to prepare your own digital business card, too. (Which reminds us… it’s also a good idea to carry your phone’s charger and a portable power supply with you during the day.)

Also, prepare – and practice – your elevator pitch. You can set your appointments and have your contact details at the ready, but what will you say? Remember, the people you meet are also trying to maximize their time at the show, so go armed with your clear and concise value proposition. (You can find more about crafting a winning elevator pitch on our website.)

Finally, wear comfortable shoes. This one isn’t on any of the lists we’ve seen, but we’re basing this on experience. You’re going to pick an outfit that puts you in the best light, and shoes are a part of that. Remember, though, that you’ll spend a lot of time walking and standing, and your chosen footwear should allow you to be comfortable throughout the day (as well as look good).

These are just a few suggestions for getting the most out of trade shows, but you can find more great tips here and here. Also, watch our website for monthly event updates.
